Sunday in church we sang, "Our God is love." That's true per 1 John 4:16.
Mistakenly, people often also think, though they may not say it, "Our god is love."
This is obvious in Western culture, especially in movies and songs.
Valentine's Day is another time it can be twisted. I'm not starting an anti-Valentine's Day movement. Just wanted to throw that out there.
BTW, here's the C.S. Lewis quote I read several years ago that put that bug in my brain:
"Every human love, at its height, has a tendency to claim for itself a divine authority. Its voice tends to sound as if it were the will of God Himself. It tells us not to count the cost, it demands of us a total commitment, it attempts to over-ride all other claims and insinuates that any action which is sincerely done "for love's sake" is thereby lawful and even meritorious. That erotic love and love of one's country may thus attempt to "become gods" is generally recognised. But family affection may do the same." - THE FOUR LOVES (HARCOURT TRADE: 1971), P. 6-7.
