Big news today in the Austin area - an outlet mall opened just in time for back to school & tax-free weekend shopping. (I may eventually go there, but it would have to be during the middle of the day in the middle of the week.) I can't help but reminisce about what the area looked like about 20 years ago when I moved to the area. Funny that it opened the same week we read Virginia Lee Burton's book The Little House.
65 years ago Burton won the Caldecott Medal for the book. The pictures are wonderfully detailed* and the story shows that urban sprawl has been around a few years. The Little House is such a sweet book, I'm sure it will make it into our permanent collection later this year.
*as Fifi commented on that & the pictures held Bellaboo's attention through the entire book
Reading note: Burton also wrote Mike Mulligan & His Steam Shovel, which we checked out because Ms. Binney read it aloud to Ramona in kindergarten. While checking out Mike, I remember that Burton also wrote The Little House & had to get it. Good choice, if I do say so myself.
